Stop Cracking Your Knuckles

Bad Habits

I am the prince of bad habits; cracking knuckles, biting nails, picking at head wounds etc. While cracking knuckles is one that has been proven to have little to no physical effects on the fingers, as reported by Penn State researchers, it is an annoyance and a habit I want to be in control of. Even though cracking knuckles does not breed arthritis or permanent damage, it is still a stress on the joints that probably in a really long run will cause problems. I find social situations where I want to crack my knuckles at innapropriate times, during dinners, movies, and conversations.

The Habit Grows

During high stress my bad habits always grow. Cracking knuckles specifically happen more often for me when the weather changes, in cold weather especially, right after intense physical activity like basketball, or using my hands in a high concentration situation such as drawing or airbrushing.

Quitting

My goal is to quit completely. I once recently decided I would only crack my knuckles in the bathroom privately. This obsession simply fed me urge to crack more often and led me to want to crack as much as possible during each bathroom break. I quickly realized it was a bad move. Now I want to quit cold turkey. I did managed to quit drinking coca cola eight months ago, another bad habit. Here are my strategies:

1. Excersize and stretch my fingers- it is proven that delicately moving the stiff joints can release the tension without cracking the joint. It is not as satisfying but is a better solution to the stiffness.

2. Family & Friends- Often times I crack out of habit, and dont even realize that I do it. I will remind my friends of family of my intentions and encourage them to tell me when I crack.

3. Find a new habit for the hands- Flipping a coin, spinning a pen, massaging my hands, tapping my fingers, drawing if applicable are all options for me to use to preoccupy my hands instead of cracking.

4. Gloves- A physical reminder like gloves on my hands will help me stop cracking out of sheer habit. It will also help keep my hands warm in the cold Minnesota weather, which should help curb my need to crack in the cold.

5. Will Power- This will be a big test of will power. I will tell myself I do not want to crack my knuckles and that my other options are much more pleasing. Hopefully resulting in a crack free future.

I didn't know you were addicted to crack! haha. Yeah, I have this same bad habit. I love it though. As soon as I stop biting my nails, I'll move onto knuckles.

love your blog. I'm going into bioengineering to come up with how to become an immortalist and as soon as I get the money, I'm getting a stack of books pertaining to immortality via amazon.com to add to my library of research and I'm also writing a sci fi story about immortality centered around an engineer that lives from present day to 400 years into the future coupled with time travel and other things.

The engineer's name is Gabriel Suchir and I'm sending my story to a publisher January/February.

I used to crack my knuckles sooooo much. It was horrible.
And everyone started giving me a hard time about it, so like two weeks ago I just decided to see how long I can go without cracking my knuckles.
Now Im just going to give it up all together.
Its rough, but I feel pretty proud that I havent given in yet. =]

I see this blog post was from a year and half ago. How are you doing with your knuckles now? My husband is TOTALLY grossed out by my cracking, and like you, I don't even know I'm doing it sometimes. I've done it for over 20 years and really want to stop. I've tried keeping a rubber band on my wrist and snapping myself when I crack. But nothing worked. So share.... have you stopped cracking? Did these methods work? Please let me know!

tigress, thanks for the comment. here is the update. I now crack only one to three times a day. depending on situations. If I am doing something really stressful with my hands, playing a sport, artwork, then I crack to relieve stress. I do my cracking a lot less frequently now.

I also have worked out a system with my girlfriend Kelsey, every three times she hears me crack I give her a back massage. This ends up being a win-win situation for us. She is still grossed out by the cracking, but has a good attitude about it now, knowing that it gets her that much closer to a massage.

A little off topic, Guys... I have a question. A week ago I had fun with this site:
Rivalspot.com - Playstation tournaments
They say you can play online NCAA Basketball game tournaments on any console for cash... had anyone tried that before? Looks like a cool idea...
Are there any other sites where you can play sports games for real moneys? I Googled and found only Bringit.com and Worldgaming.com but it looks these guys don't specialize in sport gamez. Any suggestions?
