Stockpile or die!
Bird flu, food shortages, recession, the falling dollar, marshal law, are just a few of the reasons why we should all have our own stockpile of food. Becoming self sustained is the only to make sure you have control over your own resources.
There has been food riots all over the world, and massive water shortages as well, luckily here in the US this has not happened yet, although it seems like it might. This is why I feel it is in the best interest of everyone to have a stockpile of food.
Why don't we already stockpile?
It seems odd that we all do not stockpile already, but here are the reasons why:
Cost (its expensive to keep a stockpile)
Space (stockpiles take a lot of room)
Facing the Fear (you have except the reality of the dangers)
Laziness (it takes work to build a stockpile)
How much food do I need? What type of food should I get?
The best site I have found for stockpile tips is on the bird flu manual. It gives you the most useful information on building your own effective stockpile.
Meanwhile, some simple tips include:
Buy food in bulk
Buy food that does not need to be refrigerated
(canned good, jerky, dried fruits, nuts, rice & beans)
Buy extra each time at the store
(this is the easiest way to slowly build a stockpile, plus allows you for the best ability to rotate your stockpile)
Take advantage of bulk sales
(dont buy canned corn until it is being sold 10 cans for 5 dollars, or whatever is the best possible deal at your store)
Buy nutritious food
(dont eat junk food anyways, but even moreso do not stockpile foods that are not good for you)
Buy food you like
(if you buy food you will never eat unless the world is coming to an end, then it has good odds of going to waste, buy things you will enjoy eating.)
Store foods in common places
(you dont need a pantry or a basement to store foods, you can use a closet, the top of the fridge, under beds & couches, unused shelf space, etc. Be creative and find places to put this food, it may save your life)
Food is a good investment
(you can take out a loan to build your stockpile, especially if you buy foods you would eat anyways. This will probably save you money in the long run, by eating discounted bulk foods from your stockpile periodically, then buying fast food or other expensive meals simply because they are convenient.)
Believe the Hype, or Don't
While I honestly believe and hope that it will not come to a crisis in America that we will need to resort to using our stockpile, there is still a very big chance that this is a very big possilitiy....and why give away your control. Being ready for anything, is the best way to perpare to survive. If life is good, and there is no crisis, then you simply have a lot of food on hand, and peace of mind.
